How to attract and feed Tui, Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae.

This bird is really one of New Zealand’s iconic birds and I find them a joy to see in my garden. You just need a simple bird feeder and sugar water.

Tips for Feeding Tūī with Sugar Water

Providing sugar water can be a wonderful way to attract tūī to your garden while supporting them, especially during colder months when natural nectar is scarce. The ideal sugar-to-water ratio is 1:8—for example, half a cup of sugar dissolved in four cups of water. Using a stronger mixture can invite unwanted guests like bees and wasps and cause the sugar water to spoil more quickly.

Here are some essential tips to ensure you’re feeding tūī safely and effectively:

  1. Keep It Clean
Regularly clean feeders and water bowls to prevent the spread of diseases and discourage insects from taking over.
  2. Replace Daily
Change the sugar water every day to keep it fresh and minimize the risk of transmitting diseases among birds.
  3. Choose the Right Location
Place your feeder near a flowering nectar tree, if possible, to create a more natural and inviting environment for tūī.
  4. Attract Them with Rose Water
When first introducing a feeder, adding a small amount of rose water can help attract tūī to explore it.
  5. Focus on Winter Feeding
During winter, natural food sources are limited, and tūī are more likely to visit feeders. Providing sugar water during this time can be crucial for their survival.

By following these tips, you can create a safe and inviting space for you to enjoy Tūī  in your garden!

Kererū – New Zealand pigeon, Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae in my Psidium cattleyanum tree.

This video was made when this magnificent Kererū – New Zealand pigeon, Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae landed in my Psidium cattleyanum tree. Commonly known as Cattley guava, strawberry guava or cherry guava in my Auckland garden and decided to eat my fruit. I don’t mind because I’d rather see these splendid birds than have the fruit. The fruit is disappointing because it’s got lots of seed. The entire fruit is edible, with its thin skin and juicy interior offering a soft and flavorful experience. People do use it for making jams and juices, though removing the skin can enhance its sweetness. The seeds are small and white, and the leaves can be brewed into a tea. Personally I would rather have a plum, citrus or fejoa tree in that space. Psidium cattleyanum also has the potential to be a weed and I’ve found it self seeding unwanted in places.
